Vaadhoo's modern Friday Mosque complex is the island's principal cultural heritage site, on grounds with over 1,400 years of history. Originally a major Buddhist monastery and Havitta, the site was converted into a mosque attributed to historical monarchs such as King Darumavantha and Bodu Thakurufaanu built directly on the original foundations. The nearby cemetery contains 700-year-old graves that exhibit excellent, very symmetrical stonemasonry. Marked by ancient Kufic calligraphy, symbolic afterlife motifs, and magnificent Bismillah engravings, the site serves as the final resting place for prominent figures, including a royal emir and Devvadhoo Rasgefaanu's father.
