Long before the Maldives embraced Islam in 1153 CE, Queen Kaanzikamana held power in Gan, Addu Atoll. Forced to flee due to pre-Islamic political strife among rival southern elites, she relocated to GDh. Vaadhoo, establishing a permanent royal residence. Her arrival transformed Vaadhoo into a major center of power, drawing a wave of nobles, court officials, and dignitaries who migrated to the island to construct palaces and settle, establishing Vaadhoo as a prominent seat of southern Maldivian nobility.
