Bureki Ranin, daughter of King Abu Bakr and wife of Sultan Kalhu Muhammad, was a formidable figure in Maldivian history. Denied the throne after her father’s death due to gender norms of the era, she and her husband were exiled to GDh. Vaadhoo following intense political opposition from the royal family. The island became a crucial refuge for the couple, protecting them from the turbulent politics of Malé. Following her brother’s martyrdom, Bureki Ranin rose to become Queen, ushering in a significant 29-year reign alongside her husband. Today, the ancient foundation of their former palace still stands in Vaadhoo, a site of immense historical value that merits preservation.
