About this site
Bodu Havitta is the larger of the two Havittas still recognizable on Vaadhoo, the remains of a Buddhist stupa from before the Maldives' conversion to Islam.
Bodu Havitta is the larger of the two Havittas still recognizable on Vaadhoo. Havittas are the remains of Buddhist stupas that existed prior to the Maldives' conversion to Islam roughly 900 years ago. Over time, these monuments were submerged beneath layers of earth, preserving ruins that are over 1,000 years old. Historical documentation suggests Vaadhoo originally possessed four Havitta sites; only this large mound and the small Kuda Havitta remain recognizable above ground.
